ABSTRACT

The Myth and Symbol Method rose to prominence in the 1950s as American Studies sought an analytic paradigm for examining the country's national character. The Myth and Symbol approach provides a useful model for business anthropologists to employ if they are interested in the glue that connects peoples and the similarities that exist within a group or society. Tom Mix provides useful clues to those who wish to utilize the Myth and Symbol Method in order to understand American national character. Although Hart and McCoy were rejected because of their emphasis upon reality, Mix was able to, at least superficially, mesh his performances with visions of America that were embraced by society. The Myth and Symbol Method can be viewed as an independently invented variant of the Culture at a Distance Method. The Myth and Symbol Method is a classic analytic technique of American Studies and it has served well in that capacity.
