ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on mainstream business issues. It introduces the basic principles of management, marketing, and accounting/finance to provide a foundation upon which to build a tribal focus. Tribal Management helps people to recognize and define what they want and express these desires in effective ways. When local leaders gain these skills, the community can better envision and control its own destiny. The students, smart and eager, wore typical winter gear that included heavy boots and insulated bib overalls. Most were middle-aged, although a couple of younger faces were sprinkled throughout the class. A key topic involved understanding the true needs of the community and developing strategies with these requirements in mind. Several people in the class said they worried that tourism would attract insensitive visitors and looters who would pillage their sacred grounds. In that case, they said, the community would be better off without tourism even if the industry generated cash.
