ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the variable success of policy responses to governance failures as an opportunity to examine how the consideration of alternative perspectives can be a means to potentially broaden, enrich and legitimate governance discourse. It presents alternative perspectives on the nature, source and expectations of corporate governance. The chapter provides examples of how the consideration of alternative perspectives that is an essential part of an ethical process can serve to advance the discourse of governance and the achievement of public-policy objectives. Proper diagnosis and appropriate remedy requires diligent investigation and thoughtful analysis of the root cause of the problem and its systemic as well as specific implications. A systems perspective based on systems principles, therefore, allows for consideration of any given system as a whole and, depending on the level of system-based analysis, also the interactions with other systems as well as the interrelationship and interdependencies among the parts.
