ABSTRACT

Business schools have a special contribution, indeed responsibility, to develop responsible and independent-thinking future leaders and managers. Corporate responsibility and the tough ethical and governance choices managers have to grapple with, where there are no simple, easy answers, reflect the need for business education to embrace the stakeholder model. Business schools need to create understanding and sensitivity to the new and changing world of work. There continues to be confusion among business, media, civil society and academics about what is meant by terms such as 'corporate responsibility'. The next-generation organisation needs leaders who are passionate, purposeful and responsible—leaders whose primary aim is to make a difference in the lives of people and create sustainable value premised on sound ethical values. The challenge for business schools and business itself is to implement effectively a new maxim: 'the business of business is sustainable business'.
