ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates that corporate sustainability activities are alive and developing within supply-chain management. It explores some of the emerging issues that supply-chain professionals need to consider within the scope of a sustainability strategy. Supply-chain operations have significant impact on sustainability and managing them in an environmentally and socially responsible way has now become a key management concern. The economic realities for moving towards sustainable supply chains also need careful consideration. Academics and practitioners alike agree that there is an important relationship between the management of supply-chain activities and organisational performance. Supply-chain decisions have an impact on the returns, earnings or profit of the organisation as they can affect both sales revenue and operating costs that are included in the organisation's income statement. The Supply Chain Council's Supply Chain Operations Reference model describes the five principle processes of supply-chain management as being plan, source, make, deliver and return.
