ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how an entrepreneurial approach can help to create sustainable development in low-income economies by focusing on small-scale entrepreneurial initiatives. It focuses on the following question: How can an entrepreneurial approach help low-income economies develop sustainably? In this problem statement three terms play a central role: sustainable development, entrepreneurship and low-income economies. The combination of entrepreneurship and low-income economies is usually associated with a low-cost resource model such as in the old colonial relationship. In the colonial relationship, entrepreneurs from high-income economies exploit resources from low-income economies, sometimes by using military. An assessment of the contribution of colonial development to sustainable development reveals that the approach has mixed results. Sustainability refers to financially, socially and ecologically responsible activities. The main reason for the durability of the colonial system can be found by looking at the financial aspects and the power distance generated by high-income economies.
