ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on obstacles that hinder entrepreneurship, which is one of the major drivers of innovation and the basis for sustainable development in many fields. It presents a brief overview of Ghana and its economy. The chapter discusses the common themes hindering innovation and entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur is an individual doing something different or new, and should not be confused with anyone starting a small business. A common theme surfacing all throughout the discussion on innovation and entrepreneurship in Ghana, sub-Saharan Africa and the developing world as a whole is access to finance; more specifically, the lack of access to finance. Transparency, or better, a lack of transparency is another hurdle to innovation and entrepreneurship in Ghana. In Ghana, the main problem areas in the realm of public capital seem to be electricity and transport. An interviewee recalls using generators to keep his communication centre in Accra operational during the frequently occurring blackouts.
