ABSTRACT

Although some people question our capacity to make the transition, the reality is that humans are skilled at changing. In fact, we have changed our personal thinking and behavior many times. As a species, humans have also continuously adjusted their perspectives and behaviors. We made the shift from walking as our primary source of travel to using animals, then to building ships and wagons, then trains, automobiles, airplanes, and spacecraft. Human communications have changed from primitive sign paintings, to simple writing, to the telegraph, to telephones, and then to digital communications first through phone lines and now through cables and satellites. The shift from "Me" to "We" and the mainstreaming of sustainable thinking and behavior is not a pipe dream. Deep compassion is needed when we reflect on how often people and organizations ignore the five natural laws of sustainability, and cause so much suffering in the process.
