ABSTRACT

The three levels of sustainability (TLS) framework was designed as a simple model to accentuate the interrelated nature of the individual, the organizational, and the societal levels. It then became the instrument to describe the content and the dynamics of the three domains related to the three levels: that is, sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, and leadership for sustainability. The link between sustainability and quality of life is rarely exposed and sustainability is mostly presented not as a process but as the end in itself. Moreover, sustainability on the organizational and societal level is described by many scholars; these two levels are, however, seldom presented in conjunction. Efforts to correct the failures of the system and culture that brought the world in danger are very legalistic, are inspired by the same paradigm that caused the failures, and hardly touch the core of the problems humankind is facing.
