Revisiting the business case
In re-examining someone's business case to take action on sustainability issues it is critical to understand how this is constantly shaped by his/her particular context. In short, the business case for the US Secretary of Defense to act on climate change is very clear and very strong. Possibly not, which illustrates how context can shift over time and dramatically affect the business case to act. The lesson here for us all, including local councils, is that we need to continually review and refresh our business case. Just as crucial, however, is that the business case for sustainability is aligned to, and is an integral and demonstrable part of, the core strategy of the council. Indicators and targets of performance should support, inform and shape an authority's key objectives as this way the business case is more likely to gain the political support it deserves.
