ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore Sustainable enterprise economy (SEE) change organisations as hopeful signs of the type and direction of change needed. They explain the SEE Change enterprises can be focused or have mixed purposes, be large or very small, operate independently and be linked to similar enterprises or to very different ones; and they can be for-profit, not-for-profit, networks, NGOs or boundary spanners. Sustainable enterprise is therefore characterised by long-term life and appropriate size, as well as a balance of power among, and accountability to, a range of relevant stakeholders. The array of enterprises that have been broadly defined as part of the SEE suggests that SEE Change is an emergent phenomenon that is evolving simultaneously in many different ways, with many different types of entities. The authors believe that SEE Change enterprises have: Principles and values; Purpose; Meaning; Blended values; Authenticity and integrity; and Human-scale.
