ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the requirements for the design, development, execution and management of a business-format franchise system to meet the societal needs of the poor in the developing world, focusing in particular on the healthcare sector. Developing methods of distribution for the delivery of sustainable and consistently high-quality care, at a low cost, is the reason that true business-format franchising techniques and standards need to be considered as part of the solution. Social-sector franchising adapts the principals and methods of business-format franchising to solve problems in the developing world. Business-format franchising is one method available to meet the requirements of delivering products and services to the poor in the developing world. Domestically, the term is used generally to describe the ownership of a business-format franchise by a nonprofit organisation where the proceeds from the business are used to fund its mission objectives.
