ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationships between organisations, its stakeholders and society in the broadest sense of the word—relationships every organisation should understand. It explains how International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 26000 defines stakeholders and how stakeholder interests can be in line with, but also in contrast with, the interests of society. The chapter offers a number of instruments to map the most important stakeholders of an organisation and focuses on the creation of stakeholder engagement. In 2009, ISO crafted a proposal to develop a norm for performing stakeholder analyses. The goal of this norm would be to offer practical methods and tools for the identification and involvement of stakeholders, with the goal of developing a substantiated basis for supported decisions. In order to map stakeholder interests, an organisation can ask itself in which ways stakeholders experience the effects of its activities.
