ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the first part of Clause 7—selecting social responsibility’ (SR) priorities that fit the organisation. Selecting SR priorities, based on thorough analyses and organisational ambition is crucial to any SR policy. One of the key requirements in producing a SR profile is acknowledging and measuring the social and ecological footprints—or sustainability impacts—of the organisation. ISO 26000—and other SR-related guidelines—use relevance and significance as key criteria for determining the SR priorities of an organisation. Once the organisation has a complete picture of its relevant SR impact areas, the next step is to make a selection to reduce the length of the list to more workable proportions. The foundations for selecting SR priorities come from the mapping of relevant impact areas, identifying which of these is significant and determining the sphere of influence the organisation has in each. The chapter concludes with useful tools and methods for selecting the SR priorities of the organisation.
