ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Bangladesh profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Bangladesh is a densely populated developing country of 145 million people which provides many different perspectives on the role of CSR. Bangladesh is a low-lying deltaic country subject to regular flooding, which builds up enough soil fertility for three harvests a year. The importance of CSR as a competitive factor is increasingly recognised by the business community, which has welcomed moves announced by the Bangladesh government at the end of 2008 for tax benefits for CSR-based activities. Despite some success in stabilising its population growth rate, Bangladesh is one of the world's most densely populated countries, with over 145 million people living in an area approximately the size of England. The importance of CSR in Bangladesh is increasingly recognised officially.
