ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Mauritius profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Mauritius became a Republic in 1992 and forms part of the British Commonwealth. Although Mauritius is known as an upper middle-income country, income disparities prevail. In February 1999, week-long riots erupted in Mauritius. On the economic front, from the beginning of the new millennium, Mauritius lost the trade concessions it enjoyed in the textiles and sugar industries. CSR is very much equated with corporate philanthropy and sponsorship in Mauritius, and CSR activities are usually carried out on an ad hoc basis. The 'pioneers' of CSR in Mauritius have been subsidiaries of global multinational enterprises, such as British American Tobacco Mauritius, which in 2003 became the first company to publish a social report in the country.
