ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Poland profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Poland is a democracy situated in the centre of Europe, between the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains. To understand Poland one should look at its contemporary history. Since 1989 Poland has been going through a fast transformation from communist regime to democracy and from a central planned economy to a market economy. While Poland is a relatively young society in the context of the European Union (EU), one can observe two trends: a declining population growth rate and a gradually ageing society. Poland experiences deficiencies in both the transportation network and the availability of broadband internet. Energy and climate issues in Poland are driven by two factors: EU policy and a reliance on coal by the Polish economy.
