ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Senegal profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Senegal has a long cultural tradition of solidarity and sharing, which is even reflected in its name. 'Senegal', was taken up in the indigenous Wolof language as 'Sunugal', which means 'our boat'. Many Senegalese imagine that Zakat procures a kind of divine protection. Senegal's rural population includes 10 million people living in poverty, of whom 70% are farmers. Many of Senegal's natural resources are overexploited due to population growth, a weak economy and poverty in rural areas. In Senegal, the concept of CSR is in the initial stages of development. CSR activities in Senegal take various forms: supporting artists and their work, drilling water wells and installing solar panels in villages, organising campaigns for blood donations, and the provision of equipment to rural women to lighten their domestic chores.
