ABSTRACT

This chapter provides South Africa (SA) profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. In SA, CSR is also called corporate citizenship, corporate social investment and corporate social and environmental responsibility. Corporate governance is largely seen as an element of corporate citizenship. Most CSR strategies in SA are modelled as a partnership between sectors of society, with each sector or partner contributing strengths and resources. Although the SA government's Expanded Public Works Programme more or less achieved its main objective of creating 1 million jobs for the poor by 2009, significant and sustained poverty alleviation is unlikely without business creating long-term employment and training opportunities. A rise in CSR reporting is already evident, as research suggests that SA companies report more frequently and in more depth on CSR relative to the Fortune Global 100 companies.
