ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Switzerland profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Switzerland is known for high-quality products, chocolate, cheese fondue, skiing and for its political neutrality. However, the country also has a rich tradition of responsible and sustainable business rooted in its Protestant ethic. Switzerland is one of the richest countries in the world measured by GDP per capita and cities such as Zurich and Geneva are highly ranked in terms of quality of life. Switzerland's economy is built on finance, engineering, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, luxury goods and international organisations. Switzerland is an attractive place for doing business and ranked 21st in the ease-of-doing-business index of the World Bank in 2009. Its religious origins have given Switzerland a strong tradition in science, research and education. One of the most famous academics who researched in Switzerland is Albert Einstein, a pop icon of science.
