ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Tanzania profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Tanzania, an East African country with abundant natural and human resources, shares a similar policy climate of economic and political transformation with other developing countries as they move towards greater integration into the global economy. The political and economic reforms in Tanzania during the 1990s led to the proliferation of multinational corporations in the lucrative extractive sectors of the economy. Companies in Tanzania are increasingly facing demands to improve their accountability and transparency and reduce their social and environmental impacts. Tanzania faces considerable challenges in providing an enabling environment for learning. CSR has become an important issue in Tanzania, with increasing numbers of companies embracing it as part of their corporate strategy. The modern history of Tanzania began after independence in 1961, with an economy structurally tied to the advanced capitalist economies of Europe.
