ABSTRACT

Developing capabilities for uncovering how products, services, and operations affect society and the natural environment provides the critical data channels that organizations require in order to adapt and change in today's sustainability-rich business environment. Leadership capabilities are important at all levels of organizations, but they are particularly critical at the strategic level because top managers provide the most direct route to organizational participation in the sustainability revolution. Managers can lead their organizations along either of two roads in their efforts to continuously identify, design, implement, and institutionalize the changes necessary to develop the sustainable organizational management capabilities their firms need to adapt in today's dynamic sustainability-rich environment. From a traditional management perspective, managers are efficient and effective if their organizations are capable of using their resources in economically wise ways to create products and/or services demanded by consumers in the marketplace.
