ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an in-depth discussion of several strategic leadership roles and responsibilities that are critical for the executive-level managers in business organizations who are responsible for channeling the human energy of their organizations toward a sustainable future. Nahavandi describes transformational leadership as the interaction of three factors: charisma and inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration. Spiritual leaders focus on stimulating not only the minds and bodies but also the hearts and spirits of those that they serve. The structural characteristics outlined by Peters and Waterman are designed to meet the three principles of self-renewing structures established by Volberda and A. Lewin. Thus, adopting and maintaining sustainable organizational management requires leadership processes capable of instilling a network of values that collectively comprise a sustainability-based ethical system. Effective sustainability-based leadership is critical at all levels of an organization seeking to implement sustainable organizational management.
