ABSTRACT

Corporate sustainability is on the rise — as are jobs for MBAs in corporate sustainability or environmental management departments — though demand for these jobs still outpaces their availability. Corporate sustainability departments may incorporate responsibilities such as: Environmental impact assessment and monitoring, Environmental management systems, Product stewardship/life-cycle analysis, Climate change strategy, Stakeholder engagement, Employee training and Environmental communication and reporting. Like CSR departments, corporate sustainability/environmental departments tend to be small and viewed as cost centers for companies. Corporate sustainability initiatives often involve investment in equipment or changes to corporate policies, but many also require extensive efforts to change employee behavior. While MBAs are often excited about the strategy aspects of these positions, note that these positions often include environmental compliance, monitoring, reporting, and employee training functions.
