ABSTRACT

Renewable energy is energy derived from naturally replenishing sources such as solar, wind, biomass, water (hydroelectric), and geothermal sources, though most often when speaking about the renewable energy industry, the context refers to wind or solar (photovoltaic) electric power generation. MBAs interested in the topic should understand what is meant by terms like “peak oil,” “feed-in tariffs,” “distributed generation,” “renewable portfolio standards,” and “renewable energy credits.” There are several different types of players in the renewable energy industry including: Developers, Equipment manufacturers, Generating utilities, Financiers (cleantech venture capital, REC traders) and Policy-makers. Most of the big oil and gas companies have renewable energy development divisions, but rarely recruit MBAs directly into those divisions. Renewable energy companies were not among the on-campus recruiters at York at the time, so Michelle attended lots of industry conferences.
