ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses what a code is, what it entails and why it exists. It also discusses how to communicate the content of a code, how to implement it and how to internalise it. Codes can be analysed with reference to four interlinked layers in the shape of a pyramid: mission and vision, core values, responsibilities towards stakeholders and norms and rules. The book focuses on the preconditions within an organisation for observing the code. It describes the leadership qualities which are required to establish the preconditions for observing the code. The book also presents an overview of the different ways of embedding a code within an organisation. It also describes different indicators and methods to measure the effectiveness of a code. The book concludes by naming some distinguishing characteristics of leaders who have succeeded in making a sustainable success of their codes.
