ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a number of characteristics shared by managers who make a success of their code. The managers view the code as just a piece of paper but at the same time as the ultimate guideline for their conduct. They know what is written in the code and what is not. The managers are accountable and they also hold others to account. Managers can articulate clearly what the code expects but at the same time they appreciate the dilemmas that remain unavoidable. Managers are committed to fully comply with the code and they are at the same time flexible in its interpretation and implementation. Managers ensure that the code inflicts both pain and pleasure. Managers trust their employees but at the same time check and monitor whether employees comply with the code. Managers appreciate conduct that is consistent with the code and they disapprove of conduct that deviates from the code.
