ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the evolution of Tetra Pak's first involvement in an African school feeding programme (SFP). It focuses on the differences between the SFP business models that Tetra Pak put in place in Nigeria as opposed to more traditional business models. The programme was a great success, with definable business, economic and developmental benefits; and it expanded rapidly. The potential for new SFPs in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole, should this one be successful, offered substantial new business opportunities to Tetra Pak. The difference between philanthropy and a business model such as the one described here is that a company can focus on actions for the collective good without neglecting legitimate commercial interests. The SFP initiative is a radical innovation, combining business development, sustainability and profitability. The SFP's profile was already very high—failure would threat en the reputations and credibility of all those involved.
