ABSTRACT

Grameenphone (GP) has established itself as the leading Global System for Mobile Company in the country and is currently exploring ways to increase its market share. GP continues to offer quality products and services while remaining aggressive, innovative, competitive and customer-friendly. GP sees the Community Information Centres project as primarily a corporate social responsibility operation rather than a merely profit-making undertaking; the operation runs with only marginal profit. GP has taken the leading role in increasing the accessibility of voice telephony in Bangladesh. Surveys conducted by GP and research data reveal that the reason the base of the pyramid community does not access technology is because of a fundamental lack of awareness. It is a digitally divided country where many suffer from poor literacy and education and find it difficult to access information. Internet access is a gateway to information on health-related topics— pregnancy, children's health, first aid and so on.
