ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the factors that impact on the success of natural plant product ventures. It focuses around the concept of multinationals (MNCs) buying from and assisting pro-poor enterprises rather than using the poor and associated enterprises as a market. The chapter discusses how corporate involvement at the base of the pyramid (BoP) could facilitate such ventures on a sustainable basis. The trade organisations need this certification to prove to 'green' or 'new' consumers that they support pro-poor enterprises though responsible and equitable business practices. These pro-poor enterprises can give corporations the opportunity to access unique products that can be sold at premium prices to top-of-the-pyramid consumers. Central to the theme of BoP is the creation of millions of entrepreneurs at the grassroots level who could form an integral link between corporations and the base of the pyramid. Trust and social capital, rather than legal contracts, form the real basis for sustainable business at the BoP.
