ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the aggregate analysis of survey results and an analysis of the industry as a whole. It breaks down the specific industry trends within the nine sectors surveyed. These nine industries are: education; electronics and technology; finance and insurance; healthcare; local government; professional services; retail; telecommunications; and travel and leisure. The sector 'professional services' includes companies in the fields of recruitment, consultancy, business solutions and website construction. Empowering individual workers and giving them greater scope for self-management and responsibility has been a major element in many organisational training programmes. During the mid to late '80s the Thatcher government began to 'roll back the state' in a bid to create a more efficient business environment. Empowerment has been a management and training mantra for a long time, and it may well be that it is now more embedded within the cultures of many organisations than previously was the case.
