ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a social structure especially designed for organisations that favour social sustainability, as presented in the literature. This social structure is called sociocracy. Policy-making is realised by employees by means of circles that are coupled. In this context, Reekx uses the double linking pin model. The elements at the bottom of the structure are the units' circles. Reekx has had more than ten years' experience working with the sociocratic circle method. As the method is a co-ordination mechanism, it is normally not directly visible in organisational practice. The culture of organisations such as Reekx, ATOL and Endenburg Elektrotechnics, with their clear focus on support and innovation, stimulates a climate of knowledge sharing in line with the sociocratic method. Sociocracy is hard work, however, requiring a continuous focus on remaining up-to-date and considerable resources devoted to education and training to keep people sharp and creative.
