ABSTRACT

The changing dynamics of today’s society, in which more women are taking to the workplace and where there is pressure to perform faster than ever before against a backdrop of global competition, are prompting new needs and expectations within and beyond the workplace. In the United Kingdom (UK) the Department of Trade and Industry’s campaign on work–life balance found that 4 in 10 adults between 35 and 55 feel that they spend too much time at work at the expense of other commitments. Certainly many people gain meaning and enjoyment in life through their work. ‘In the experience of most people no clear cut distinction can be established between the world of work and the world of family, friends and social networks and community,’ reports a study by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. The evolution of technology facilitates the reconciliation of work and life more and more.
