Understanding of business cycles, the tools and technology at disposal, the advent of the information age and, the superbly trained and talented people available, make the role a pleasure and a privilege for those who truly understand the opportunities. The pressures on CEOs have undoubtedly increased as technology has accelerated the pace of change, but the same technology has created the tools to enable companies to manage change effectively. While the prospect of forced dismissal hangs over them, CEOs also have to get to grips with a new relationship with a less deferential board. ‘Rapid technological change as well as global consolidation means companies need CEOs skilled in running sprawling enterprises. Indeed, many CEOs were brought up in an era that was by no means dominated by information technology, yet for their businesses to survive they have to keep abreast of the latest developments.
