ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a new picture of possible innovations towards a sustainable society based on the concept of sustainable system innovation (SSI). It also outlines the seven main characteristics of SSI and presents a proposal for the design of the innovation process. The chapter draws the importance and applicability of the concept of SSI and the seven characteristics described, especially for sustainable mobility. The concept of SSI is based on the fact that environmental gain achieved by redesigning existing products and processes is limited. In order to stand a chance of success, SSIs must be based on relevant social and technological developments. As described for the first characteristic, an important issue of SSI is to find win–win solutions for ecological, economic and social sustainability. Strategic, realistic, practical experiments, with clear learning objectives for all parties involved, are key elements of the SSI method.
