ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates on the urban public road transport system. It analyses the technology transitions that can potentially reduce the carbon intensity of the transport sector. The courts considered the committee's recommendations and special orders were passed to shift public transport vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel. In the case of CNG use in New Delhi, the incorporation of Indraprastha Gas Ltd in 2000 resulted in a large gas-supplying agency. The largest manufacturer of three-wheelers in India, Bajaj Auto Ltd, introduced new four-stroke models with company-fitted CNG kits on the vehicles. During the court hearing process, the non-governmental organisations made important recommendations in favour of CNG, as other types of clean fuel were import-dependent and not available in the required quantities. Both case studies demonstrate the presence of a technology hierarchy beginning with individual technologies such as CNG conversion kits, CNG transport techniques for bulk as well as small quantities and dispensing technology at filling stations.
