ABSTRACT

Founded in 1989, the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) is a network of more than 80 environmental, investor and advocacy groups promoting sustainability. CERES is best known for the CERES Principles, a set of ten principles covering the major environmental concerns facing companies, including energy conservation, reduction and disposal of waste, and risk reduction. The engagement between companies and stakeholders within CERES is one of the hallmarks of the CERES Principles, building trust and preventing conflict: One of the greatest advantages CERES offers is that differences are discussed privately and in person rather than through the media or in courtrooms. CERES participants consider the trust-based approach to conflict resolution to be one of the most valuable contributions of the organisation, along with public disclosure of environment-related data through the CERES report.
