ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to contributes to the understanding of partnerships—specifically, of three-way partnerships combining partners drawn from government, civil society and the business sector—and of the way in which partnerships can contribute to poverty alleviation and development. The focus is on the oil, gas and mining industries, as these sectors have tended to be the primary drivers of foreign direct investment in developing countries. The book discusses the mechanics of partnering, synthesising the lessons learned from across the case studies. It provides more detailed guidance for those considering establishing tri-sector partnerships, including a discussion of the resources and skills required and the key elements of partnership. The book also provides specific guidance on monitoring and measuring the performance of partnerships. It looks at partnerships, encompassing issues such as the types of outcome that may be achieved, the potential partners and partnership structures.
