ABSTRACT

When Nelson Mandela took over the reins of government in South Africa, he prophesized: “If globalization is to create real peace and stability across the world, it must be a process benefiting all.”

Such was the motivation and the inspiration in April 2001, when the new Greenhouse Gas Alternatives Center began its operations. Officially named the Research Center for Developing Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas Alternatives, or the “F-Center,” it is located in the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba, Japan. This organization is playing an important role as a “center of excellence” for sustainable chemistry.
