ABSTRACT

How green is ‘green’? And how much greener is ‘greener’? When we talk about buying greener products in public purchasing, one question is how much benefit on the environment our ‘greener’ product can have. Environmental sciences have taught us in the past that, to do this, we cannot simply compare one green product characteristic to one of a ‘brown’ product, but we have to take the full life-cycle of a product into account: from cradle to grave. This chapter develops an approach to using this idea in decision-making in procurement.
