ABSTRACT

Knowledge of kinds of waste-streams can provide a means to determine potential linkages. But this doesn’t link the waste-streams; decisions by people do. Turning wasted materials into potential new enterprises is an elegant idea, but enterprises are started by entrepreneurs, not printouts. Computerised linkages can provide information, and computer models can illustrate possibilities, but the best they can do is stimulate imagination, not bring about the connections. What role do people and social processes play with regard to industrial ecology and sustainable economic development?
