ABSTRACT

The Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center (PEEC; see Fig. 17.1) looks out of place as you approach it along busy Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis, MN. The modern office and light industrial facility is unique in the midst of a heavy industrial area and is adjacent to an ageing 1960s-style shopping centre that has obviously seen better days. From a distance, there are only a few hints that this is a model green building, named in the Earth Day Top Ten in the year 2000 by the American Institute of Architects and winner of numerous other awards, including the international Bremen Partnership Award and the Energy Star Award of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
