ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a management model for a corporation to practise total integration of environmental management system and sustainable development (SD). It presents a state-of-the-art model for a 'sustainable management system', which integrates corporate environmental, health, safety and SD. The presentation of the model is followed by four case studies: Rohm and Haas (R&H), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Sunoco, Inc. and Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. The history of R&H, emanating from the original partners, Otto Rohm and Otto Haas, allowed for a deep concern for both employees and the environment in which the company operated. Within GSK, the revisions that occurred with the new standards were to make management systems an implementation activity throughout the entire system requirements, and not only for manufacturing and R&H but for commercial and office buildings as well. GSK also further expanded responsibilities into key suppliers and their contract manufacturers.
