ABSTRACT
Traditionally, environmental management systems have been location-based, addressing the impacts of local activities on the environment. A product-based environmental management system (PBEMS), in contrast, addresses the impacts hardware products have on the environment. This chapter discusses the business model in which the system was developed, sustainability and product realization. The success of the team can be attributed to their focus on the goals of establishing an effective framework for product sustainability, seamlessly integrating sustainability concepts with business processes and achieving third-party certification. Top-management support was initially obtained by coupling the concept of a PBEMS with the realignment of the Mobility Solutions organisational structure and product realisation strategy. The Mobility Solutions Green Team developed, implemented and maintains the PBEMS. The Green Team worked diligently to engage the design and development community in the PBEMS and to demonstrate the environmental impacts developers could influence during design.
