ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several concrete models allowing both academics and practitioners to evaluate and promote international corporate responsibility (ICR) in the multinational enterprise (MNE). It discusses MNE strategy more specifically, looks at the interaction with international government and international nongovernmental organizations (NGO) strategy. International NGOs have a role to play in working with international governmental organisations on ICR codes. The World Bank acting as a 'clearinghouse' of corporate social responsibility (CSR) materials represents the lowest level of Bank involvement in ICR. International business—namely MNEs—may use ICR to respond to their customers, financiers and employees. International NGOs—such as the International Business Leaders' Forum, Global Reporting Initiative, Social Accountability International and CSR-Europe—are increasingly becoming active in ICR. Increasing engagement in ICR programmes represents an important step increasing the accountability of business and promoting public-private partnership.
