ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some assumptions behind the concept and looks critically at how it is being deployed in the organisational studies literature. It suggests a framework that can be used to teach students about the concept of sustainability by taking a more critical approach. The chapter discusses three perspectives that educators can use to develop a course on teaching sustainability critically: theoretical, multidisciplinary and local and global perspectives. A brief historical overview of the discourses about sustainability is a useful starting point. The chapter discusses several problematic issues about the concept of sustainability and the limited way it is currently being taught in business schools. A critical analysis of the problematic notion of 'global' sustainability and the policies developed by the United Nations, World Bank and the World Trade Organisation may reveal the colonial and monocultural dimensions of which countries have the privilege to define what is 'global'.
