ABSTRACT

Information, communications, computing and electronic (ICCE) technologies are developing rapidly and assuming a more prominent role in the global economy. Many companies, from traditional manufacturing to e-commerce, are adopting ICCE solutions and applications as part of their business growth and development. The advance of ICCE has been so rapid that we do not yet know, for instance, under what circumstances tangible gains or losses will arise for sustainable development from these technologies, or the degree to which ICCE technologies serve as substitutes or complements to existing technologies and socio-technical systems. ICCE technologies are transforming the operations and business strategies of companies and industry groups, and, as a consequence, may have important implications for organisations in terms of environmental management and policy issues. Compounding the ambiguity is the speed at which many ICCE technologies are developing and transforming. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
