ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the organisational implications of product-oriented environmental management (POEM). As the scope of a company's environmental management broadens, POEM can be seen as imposing new demands on a firm. The chapter presents a case study that looks at the way POEM has been implemented and managed within Xerox Europe. The case study reveals useful insights into the organisational and cultural dimensions of managing POEM in what may be described as a turbulent business environment. POEM was viewed as an important concept for the company and its customers. Active management support for POEM-like initiatives is created through dialogues with senior management, who commit themselves to the results of such a dialogue and provide support for the company's commitment. An important enabler of POEM at Xerox Europe is regarded to be the company's 'solutions' approach as well as its well-known reputation for knowledge management.
