ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers what contribution is needed in order to ensure that agriculture and forestry are appropriately considered in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations. The task originally formulated was to provide political decision-makers with basic arguments to help secure sustainable agricultural production methods and food supplies through the upcoming WTO negotiations on trade in agriculture. The problems and deficiencies that are giving rise to the concern for sustainable development can be regarded equally as symptoms, indicating that the guidelines governing world markets need to be redefined and reoriented in ecological, social and economic terms. The book attempts to confront the need to formulate principles and means as well as grounds for political implementation. It aims to contribute to the debate by providing basic theoretical arguments.
