ABSTRACT

Industrial production processes are causing serious environmental damage (Hutchinson and Hutchinson 1997). During the past few decades, environmental protection has been increasingly considered in state legislation by the definition of emission standards and the imposition of pollution charges. The emission standards usually follow technological development (dynamic standards) to improve the protection of the environment. Manufacturing companies have to face these standards and adjust their production processes to meet the current legislation. In addition, there is an incentive to consider the environmental impact of production in response to the growing environmental awareness of customers. Building up the image of an eco-friendly company may lead to a competitive advantage.
